Automail are artificial prosthetic limbs made out of metal. They are much more durable than regular prosthetics and unlike regular prosthetics, can be moved via the users will. Automail is powered by the electricity created by the movement of muscles.[1]
Automail is very heavy, making it impossible to swim while wearing it. [1] The weight can also put a burden on the wearer. While in Rush Valley, Dominic that the weight of Ed's automail may be stunting his growth. But it is also waterproof and can be worn in the bath or shower. [1]

Automail Mechanics
